Default Kubuntu 17.04

Have to agree with Dedoimedo's review of the latest Kubuntu. Didn't want to but you can't win 'em all.

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/kubuntu-zesty.html

Finally for us fussy lookers, with Plasma 5.9 you can change the individual panel icons instead of being lumped with whatever the system theme dishes out.

What's more the widgets work without crashing the desktop and the weather does actually give me Teresopolis instead of some Berlin suburb.

Memory use is around 1.3 which is fine for modern machines.

It recognized my wireless keyboard/mouse and my Samsung Galaxy

At last Plasma 5 is getting useful and of course it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Very nice distro indeed!

They did an excellent job on MATE version too!

Coming from a guy who doesn't really care for any of the Ubuntu flavors, this is a huge compliment.

Must admit, after going back to Windows 7, Kubuntu was giving message about missing proprietary drivers (something it did not say while i was with Windows 10) - whereas test driving MATE on dual bootin' with Windows 7 did not have any error messages or other things to report about except to update apps.

Different DE's process stuff, especially graphics, in a different way and any messages you get will have no relation to whatever you are dual booted with. These 'Notification 'Helper' messages prompted me about a specific driver for Intel GPU's, Flash for Firefox and language packs.

You can filter these or disable them altogether here:

'System Settings' -> Notifications -> 'Other Notifications'.

Just a quick update on my experiences with this Kubuntu distro.

Have re-installed it and it automatically installed a network printer but it let me do the work on my personal usb printer.
The driver it wanted to add and which was quickly recognized this time "using processor microcode for Intel CPUs from intel-micro code".

So, by and large everything went well until i went to install Plank...
Failing to install its preferences app at the same time, i was unable to uninstall Plank nor to install the preferences one.

Otherwise, the distro works nicely and looks nice too!

Back to worrying about latest ransomware on Windows...

Mine started playing up today so it's gone.

Because of my vision issues I can no longer spend ages staring at a screen trying to fix things.

I started getting internal error messages, none of which ever killed the desktop, but suddenly the file manager would blank out when I was working with content on my external drive and then it refused to copy pictures off my Samsung phone, though this was fine a couple of days ago, so bye, bye.

My sympathies MC.
Guess we set our hopes too high sometimes.
Kubuntu is on the right track though.

These issues lie with Plasma5 and not Kubuntu. Yet another 'improved' DE that was worse than what it replaced and released before it worked. It is getting better, but a long way still to go.

Was tempted at trying latest OBRevenge with KDE Plasma, but your comment MC + bad experiences with anything Arch just scattered that temptation away.
