It's also not just the distro but the DE used as many distros offer one or several choices. Xfce for instance will be a lot faster than Plasma. Also, with some specific lightweight dsitros you can end up with a compromise on features. For me, MX-16 is trouble free, light and fast plus you have all the customization option of Xfce.

I'd second what MC has stated regarding MX-16: even though it's been several years since I dabbled with Linux, I have been very impressed with the speed and overall look and it has only crashed once since install.

If you go go for a real light distro you'll probably end up with the hassle of downloading and installing software, which is never as straight forward as doing so in Windows IMHO.

Thank you all for the support. My major problem is the AMD C-50 Processor (only 1Ghz) in both laptops. Graphics are also nothing to boast about - AMD Radeon HD 6250. Even Windows 7 is painfully slow with this. I have Q4OS with Xfce DE in one laptop. It is faster than Win 7 but quite slow to start up.

In comparison, my Desktop with Intel Pentium 4 and Windows XP is lightning fast. So, I don't need Linux for the Desktop. It is for the laptop that I am looking for a Linux Distro. Based on my hardware, recommendations would be most welcome.
