Having also uninstalled Compiz and still facing the same problems, I decided on a complete fresh install. I only had a few docs which I managed to save to my external HDD. The install went smoothly and quickly as I had already partitioned the drive and the OS was on a DVD.

I think that I'll steer clear of Compiz for the time being!

PS I think posts #25 to #37 should be moved to the MX-16 thread to avoid confusion, if that's possible?

Default From agony to ecstasy...

My wife's LT, that was running W10, recently had an update which completely bricked it.

(I will never know whether the update, which caused the mayhem to the LT. was a Windows one and no longer care!)

To cut a very long story short: I booted from a MX-16 DVD and recovered almost 14.0GB of files by uploading to the cloud; my external HDD had also failed for some unknown reason.

I then attempted to install MX-16, but got a warning that I needed to run GSmartControl before continuing: it stated that the HDD had passed their test and the install went smoothly.

My wife is perfectly happy as I managed to rescue her precious files and she now has a fantastic OS that actually works.

Dead Windows 10 machines after updates here are two a penny. I'm no longer involved with servicing customers but my former partner has a stack of boxes and laptops waiting for attention. Why folks continue to pay for this system beats me.

Partly because of my eyes, I no longer have the opportunity to 'play' with umpteen Linux systems but I have my main PC dual booted with Mint KDE4 LTS and Ubuntu Budgie Remix and both systems out perform Windows and give zero trouble.

I too had a hick with recent Windows 10 update.
A Word hotkey ceased to work and the program froze every time.
Turns out, it was a conflict with another app (which was fixed by the company within 24 hours).
But, before you find out why, you panic and think, "hey, do i have a virus etc.?!"
If something similar happens again, might be going back to dual booting with Windows 7 once and for all.

Have been dabbing around with LinuxMint KDE 18.2 beta as of late, and this version is just superb!

Btw, do like MX-16 a lot but for some reason, latest version broke the volume control on Logitech headset.
Also, although GUI has improved considerably, still not as "pretty" as LinuxMint KDE on my laptop.

IMO it's not a really fair comparison as KDE is the Full Monte when it comes to desktops, especially effects since Compiz no longer works with most of what it did do before they were 'upgraded' Even so, KDE5 lost support for Superkaramba which is one of the reasons why I still use Mint KDE4.

My bad for comparing MX-16 with LM KDE.

Prior to latest Kubuntu, have always steared away from KDE.
So sluggish and energy consuming.
LM KDE 18.2 has picked up it (without the glitches).

Still, have much appreciation for the tweaks and options MX-16 has compared to the "great" and "less great" distros.
