I used my own suggestion and installed Kubuntu on a USB drive. Went ahead bought me a 64 GB 3.0 thumb drive then using Minitool Partition Wizard I formatted it to EXT4. I burned Kubuntu 14.04 onto another thumb drive. I rebooted to the USB drive with Kubuntu on it. From there I installed Kubuntu on the 64 GB thumb drive just like it was a hard drive. Presto I now had a working version of Kubuntu on my thumb drive. Speed was greatly increased with the USB 3.0 drive (actually I noticed no slow down) No need to deal with the persistence thing.
