Sound issues have been an ongoing issue with Q4. Maybe something here will help.

Thank you MC.

Picking up from that thread, did
sudo apt install pulseaudio pavucontrol-qt
which proved it was already installed.
Remove one item it said to take off and... now have stereo input!

Was it a corrupt file?
Thought such things don't happen on Linux...

My guess is a conflict that was discovered at some point and then adjusted via the package manager which picked this up when you ran the command.
