Okay, I upgraded to Linux Mint 17.3. Since then I've been seeing a message in Update Manager and it had me scratching my head as to what I should do...
![]() Clicking on the "OK" button opens the Software Sources window but where do I go from there? After puzzling over this for some time I finally figured it out. For those who are as mystified as I was, here's what to do: a. If You Really Want To Switch To Mirrors That May Be Faster ![]() 1. In the Software Sources window, make sure the "Official Repositories" button is selected in the left pane. 2. Click the rectangular box next to "Main(rosa)". ![]() 3. When the "Select a mirror" dialog appears, wait patiently until the "Speed" column is fully populated. 4. Select a mirror at or near the top of the list with a high kB/s number. 5. Do the same for "Base (trusty)". 6. Click on the "Update Cache" button when you are done. 7. Follow the instructions below to stop the message from appearing in Update Manager. b. To Stop The Message From Appearing In Update Manager 1. In the Update Manager, click on Edit->Preferences. 2. In the Preferences dialog, check the box next to "Don't suggest to switch to a local mirror" then click the "Apply" button. Last edited by Joe A.TT; 21. Dec 2015 at 09:55 PM. When you install Linux Deepin and run it for the first time it performs a speed test on all the available mirrors (takes approx 1 minute) and then sets the fastest one for you automatically. I guess there's room for improvement everywhere.

Yes. One area that needs improving is Linux needs be more user friendly. Take this case as an example. When the user is taken to the Software Sources page there is nothing there to suggest what he should do next. There's a lack of intuition.
All of this is tied in to a common trend I've found with Linux - it's as though they expect all users to be geeks. Users are expected to know what to do. This needs to change otherwise Linux will always be at the bottom of the barrel. |

This is very true. Also, a lot of the so called Linux forum "help" leaves much to be desired. I can understand to a point because many humans are lazy by nature but advice like "try searching the forum before posting" is not what folks need.

yeah - have updated the sources list, in the past,
but, the big issue is the large amount of US based servers, some of which are very slow & slow down the search. interestingly, the fastest servers, aren't always a local or regional server. .. |

Mr. Dedo is not impressed with the latest offering.
