Default Creating Swap Partition in Linux

When installing a Linux Distro, is it mandatory to create a Swap Partition?

Thank you for the links. 'Simplified explanation' is just what the doctor prescribed - for me that is! The links cover the subject well enough. Considering the RAM I have, it goes without saying that I'd be a fool not to have a Swap Partition, and it takes so little Disk space.
