Default Linux Mint - Mate or Cinnamon?

I am thinking of trying out Linux Mint. Which version to go for... Mate or Cinnamon?

Linux Mint 17.2 seems to be the latest, but I could not find any reviews for it yet.

Difficult question because users enjoy different DE's for many different reasons. IMO Cinnamon offers a more modern experience but I would also say the community edition of Manjaro Cinnamon is a better product than Mint.

Thanks MC. I only want to try Linux Mint at this point. Had tried some Linux distros around year back I think, and experience had not been that good. So, I want to try Linux Mint, with which most people seem happy.

I think I will go for Cinnamon, and see how it goes.

Might not be soon though, before I come around to installing and trying it out.

Cinnamon is nice!
Uses a bit more resources than XFCE (which i want to try out today), but apparently much improved in that area with latest version.

I've given up on Manjaro (printer issues - cf. why Spatry and Matthew Moore don't like latest versions). Have recently tried Antergos (ARCH based - rolling release) but was faced once again with printer issue. Did like latter for boot/shutdown speed (almost like a Mac!), beautiful forum... but without easy printer setup, not user friendly enough for me.

So, going back to good old LM which works pretty well out of the box, good support system and configurability.

I have been on Linux Mint Cinnamon 60% of the time ever since I have started to try it. And probably only one of the three distro's that I have tried but I finally stuck with Linux Mint. I needed something with a huge software stack and really simple to use with enough customization. Mint became an instant choice.

+ 1 George.J

BTW, just want to add that LM XFCE that i've booted from a live CD to install, is the first distro i have ever tried that automatically recognized and showed the external monitor at same time as the laptop one. Even the default viewing option (1280x1024) for that external monitor was available on live boot!

Thanks for the replies guys. Have been downloading Linux Mint Cinnamon. Let's see when I get to install it . Downloading will take time too, since I have a slow connection.

Did an upgrade from Linux Mint 17.1 to 17.2 Cinnamon. In this new version, it now allows for opening a window in the center of the desktop by default. Will update the Tips and Tricks when I get time.

Unless you're a bit of an expert who appreciates the differences between the two (which I'm not) I don't think it matters too much which you choose. I tried both and both worked fine for me, I decided to use Cinnamon but it was little more than a flip of a coin decision. I've tried distros that are visually more attractive but there's always been some drawback whereas Mint has proved easy to use and reliable.

Thanks MaikL . You are right, I am not much of an expert on Linux.
