Debian + Cinnamon

Makulu have just released a Cinnamon edition.

"To Date, Apart from LMDE which is not 100% Completed, this is the ONLY Debian based Cinnamon 2.2.x Release available at the present time that is running Full steam out of the box Ö"

http://makululinux.com/cinnamon/

IMO this is a very good move on the part of this distro which has also stripped out much of the bloat included in previous versions.

Note the remarks about using out of date Cinnamon applets!!

Probably best move as LinuxMint's Clem is moving in same direction as well.

I booted the live CD of Makulu earlier today. Very interesting design. Not sure I want to 'hop' away from Crunchbang though.

Makulu site hacked

After brief consideration on LinuxMint Debian edition, i decided to give Makulu a shot but then i just read this:

"The Repository server box is a complete mess. it has definitely been hacked and used to send out a DDoss Attack, therefore I will need to do a complete reload. I am too scared to even backup the data since I donít know what the hacker left behind that could be backed up as well.

I will have to do a complete reinstall from scratch and re-setup the Repo. This will take a good few days and I expect the Repo will be offline for at least a week, possibly more.

All users will continue to receive updates on their systems as normal, this does not effect end users at all."

Would this issue have any impact if i downloaded .iso from Distrowatch?

This will merely redirect to the distros own download source anyway and as per their statement, because the repository server was hacked there is no telling what may have been tampered with.

IMO this distro is not yet ready for prime time. Although they have been listening to the negative feedback and some issues are fixed, many more remain and it appears that when these get posted to the forum they make an admin response and then block the OP from carrying on with the discussion. :)

I know Mate & Cinnamon are different, but an interesting thread here for installing Mate on Crunchbang which is Debian-based: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=37543

Hope that's of interest?

Mate is nice but Cinnamon is tastier and will even more so with next official LinuxMint 17.1 coming around the corner soon!

BTW, seems like Makulu got their problems solved.

I've never been into Crunchbang but I have tinkered with installing different DE's on top of what was supplied as standard in other distros with varying degrees of success. My conclusion was if you want MATE, Cinnamon, KDE or whatever, pick a distro version that ships with this as standard.

That's what I do, but I realise that others like to try others ... the beauty of Linux ... lots of choice :)
