Plasma 5

I read Dedoimedo's article about Plasma 5: http://netrunner-mag.com/plasma-5-anoer-opinion/ and from what I can tell it was made using the Live Session only.

I've been trying to install Kubuntu 14.10 Beta 1 onto my HDD. It seems to install without a hitch but at boot-up it stalls at the login step. I was wondering if anyone has tried to install KDE plasma 5 onto an existing Ubuntu type system or was able to successfully install Kubuntu's 14.10 Beta 1 on their HDD.

KDE's Plasma 5 looks great so far and can't wait to work with it further. :)

I agree. I think this will be a much better move than was from 3.5 to 4. Unfortunately I'll be waiting for some time proven stability before making an install.

Ok, managed to install Plasma 5 over top Kubuntu's 14.40 LTS on my spare Partition. It's taking the long way but fortunately I already had the ISOs. So, although convoluted it ends with Plasma 5 running from my HDD. :)
So far I'm liking it allot. I'm sure I'll be running into a few snags but I expect it and accept a few niggles here and there.

The interface is clean and uncluttered and that is how I like it. I tend to keep my desktop clean with as few icons as possible. More to come :)

Here's a glimpse.

Plasma 5 looks like iOS 7 (which resembles Android 4.4 again).

Here's a more familiar Desktop, Still Plasma 5.

Maybe so, but I love the clean minimal looks.

My thoughts about Plasma 5. I share the enthusiasm from others that have been checking this new desktop out. It shows that a logical, clean and intuitive desktop can be developed without making people learn a new way of doing things. I feel if developers want to introduce new desktop designs they should at least give people a choice of the new or the traditional. At the end of the day I believe Plasma 5 will be a winner.

Dedoimedo likes it too (a lot).

"Without sounding like a fanboy, I do find the Plasma 5 framework to be the most sensible future environment for computing use currently available in the Linuxsphere".

So, as I mentioned at the top of this post I tried to install Kubuntu 14.10 Beta 1 which can be found here. It installed okay, but failed to get past the login at first boot. I then tried a little experimented and installed Kubuntu 14.10 Beta 1 ontop of Kubuntu 14.04. Convoluted, but hey, it worked, albeit it was very unstable. I then used this method using Kubuntu 14.04:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:neon/kf5
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install project-neon5-session project-neon5-utils project-neon5-konsole project-neon5-breeze project-neon5-plasma-workspace-wallpapers.

Of course, this allows switching to the Plasma 5 desktop at the login screen.
