Default Unity as life intended

There's little doubt that vanilla Ubuntu out of the box is as appealing as wet toast. Unity can be made better of course, but it requires a lot of work if you're working with straight Ubuntu. The Oz Unity remixes however have done all the hard work for you, including some pretty cool desktop effects.

I tried their latest Diamond IIB (which I believe is based on 13.10) and for me it didn't do a lot. Their stable release however, Black Opal (based on the 12.04 LTS) is absolutely superb and blindingly fast.

Even if you don't like Unity, I urge you to try Black Opal. It might just change your mind.

After this long in development you would expect it to be stable and it is, but the downside is almost 1100MB of updates after installing.

It looks nice, but it still has this "this doesn't belong to a desktop computer without a touch interface" look.

I agree, but at least they've made Unity more useful and appealing out of the box for those unable or unwilling to spend ages pimping up a vanilla Ubuntu.

A similar setup, but for those preferring the traditional desktop look, would be Cylon Linux. Although it comes with a less than useful Unity 2D as an option, the default Gnome Classic DE is first class. It also has plenty of effects pre-enabled and includes the Emerald theme manager, so custom looks are limitless.

I'll post a screenshot [now here] and link it back here as soon as I get a free minute.

Unity without Unity? Agreed, it's probably the best way to use Unity.

(Eww, that website. "Why Linux is better?" is a collection of plain lies. Makes me sad.)

Has anyone noticed, if you do a search on this forum using the key words Linux Unity there are very few posts, yet Unity was Gnome's new flag ship. It amazes me, the people running the show are too close to the project to hear the suck.

I agree. I don't know a single person running Unity as a desktop.
