Why choose between *buntu and Mint exclusively?

I'm downloading now via Distrowatch.
At 2.6G file size, it's no wonder they ran out of bandwidth!

If i chose Ubuntu or LinuxMint, they're the ones i'm most familiar with and find to be most user friendly for newbies to Linux world. Also like to know that a distro is being updated or innovated on a regular basis. Albeit, not always to the users liking but hey! you can't always win!
