Default KDE - Bad font rendering in F/fox and T/bird

Mint16KDE - the fonts used in rendering websites and messages in KDE are ugly to say the least. This appears from a browse on Google to be a regular issue with multiple suggested cures.

Trouble is many of the posts are flatly contradictory and so far as I can see there's no advice recent enough to be relevant. Also most deal with the FF and TB interfaces, which I have solved with an extension.

So my questions are to you guys that are regularly bouncing from one distro/de to another. Do you also see this degradation in font rendering? And what, if anything, do you do about it?

Regards
David
