Default Linux Mint firewall

I have just started using Linux Mint 14 Mate. I looked on their forum to find out about the firewall but it was a bit confusing. Some thought it was necessary some not, others said the firewall wasn't really the firewall.

I followed these instructions to turn it on. Software manager => gufu => install, but it seemed it was already installed. But after doing this I could not find "firewall configuration" in the system section of the menu (to turn the firewall on), as the instructions said it would be. I did a search and could not find it anywhere.

So do I need to turn the firewall on and if so how? Have not installed yet, this is all from a live DVD.

Thanks for any help.

Each to their own but I have never liked UFW and prefer to use Firestarter instead. I always uninstall UFW and GUFW (if installed) and then install Firestarter. You can then launch this from the program menu and configure it. There is an option for a tray icon and if you enable the ICMP filter it will achieve "true stealth" at GRC for what that's worth, but some folks feel better having it.

Firestarter itself is no longer in development but it works fine apart from the log events which won't.

You can test this out with a live session first to see what you think.

This image is of Firestarter on the latest Zeven OS Neptune KDE (where the event notifications do work).

The only settings I change are:
  • enable tray icon
  • minimize to tray on close
  • apply policy changes immediately
  • tick the main box to enable ICMP filtering
