Default Another Alternative

OK, so we've all done the Gnome thing and messed around with Mate, Cinnamon and how ever many other forks have surfaced during the past year. We've also tinkered with some of the more lightweight desktops like the excellent Xubuntu and it's turbo clone Voyager. KDE has figured too, but despite the improvements since 4.8, it appears that a lot of KDE users still hanker after the good old 3.5 version. Some time ago I remember reading about the Trinity desktop which is based on the former KDE 3.5, but the odd reports of compatibility issues when running it on a V4 distro put me off.

I was quite surprised therefore to learn that there is a full version of Kubuntu 10.10 powered by Trinity which I hadn't come across before.

I've only managed to have a brief look at the live session so far, but it's lightening fast (especially considering I downloaded the x32 bit version by mistake) and everything else seems to work without a hitch. I downloaded Firefox, VLC, Thunderbird and Superkaramba using the package manager without issue.

I will certainly be giving this a bit more of an in depth survey.

I encountered quite a few bugs on the latest version of Kubuntu but to be fair I can't rule out my hardware and I'm unsure if Kubuntu's use of KDE 4.8 was the problem. I've become Leary of patched desktops since Gnome 3 was patched to resemble Gnome 2 by various distros.
I will be curious to see if Trinity can continue for the long haul relying on KDE 3.5

PClinuxOS uses KDE 4.6.5 and Mint uses KDE 4.7.4 and both of which have performed very well (for me anyway).

Well it certainly seems to be active still with recent updates and a new release due out this fall. See also:

"NOTE: The Trinity Desktop Environment project is not a continuation of KDE 3.5 by KDE e.V., members of which no longer support the KDE 3 series. Trinity is an independent fork using a separate developer community."

Hmmm.... Cinnamon and Mate will be forked off of Gnome 2 and SolusOS will be built on Gnome 3 and now Trinity will be forked off of KDE 3.5. We have many distro's that were forked off of Debian, Fedora and Slackware. It appears Distros are now taking it a step further by producing systems built from desktops such as KDE,Gnome, XFCE, LXDE ,Unity and more. Perhaps we will see a breakaway Distro that plows its own road altogether:

I do see myself trying Trinity thanks for sharing the find

Blimey... Cinnamon is built on Gnome 3 and Mate is forked off Gnome 2, I'll get it right one of these days.

Anyway took a quick look at Trinity and it looks solid enough but so does Mint 13 KDE and PClinuxOS 2012 KDE. Trinity will defiantly be a distro to keep in mind.

This is where I'm at as of now. For KDE, something solid that works (all the time ) with everything out of the Box - Korora 17. For a "pretty", lighter weight option that just needs a bit of stuff adding - Mageia. For those wanting a mainstream desktop and are prepared to put up with a few rough edges - Mint Maya Cinnamon. For those not fussed about the desktop but still want something that performs without errors and looks great, either Voyager 12.04 or Solus 1.2. I would have said Xubuntu, but Voyager adds so much more without breaking anything, it's a no brainer.

I'm back with Mint13 Mate but now as my default OS. This reminds me of the girlfriends I dated in my youth. They could never completely get over their ex-boyfriends. Thats me with Gnome

The good thing is I have a empty partition waiting for something new
