Correction/Update: Despite the above references, Startpage (or StartingPage) and Ixquick have some differences in relying the search engines.

From the about page of StartPage or StartingPage:

"When you search with StartPage the Web results are generated by Google. This offers you the search results and search features you may have grown accustomed to." The same goes to StartingPage.

From the about page of Ixquick:
"When you search with Ixquick search engine, you are searching many popular search engines simultaneously and anonymously. Combined, these engines cover more of the Internet than any one search engine alone."

Thanks to recommendations made on these forums, I've been using StartPage for a while though have recently moved over to using Ixquick which I find very good.
I only revert to Google occasionally when looking for something local specifically, just to make sure I've covered most eventualities. (I know StartPage uses Google results but in practise it appears that there can be slight differences under some circumstances).
