Seeking Best Anonymiser

Hi Readers,

Various tech forums appear to favour the following Anonymous IP Software :

proXPN, CyberGhost, SecurityKiss, HotspotShield, PrivateProxy, HideMyIP, GhostSurf, Anonymizer Anonymous Surfing.

Net chatter suggests :
a) Some anonymiser versions only work with certain versions of Firefox
generally the older.
b) Free versions of anonymisers are often less speedy, effective, compatible than
paid versions.
c) Some anonymisers are more / less compatible with Windows versions, various
security, antivirus software and ISPs.

I use XP Office 2003, Broadband, Firefox (each upgrade claims improved speed / security).

I seek an easy to use, highly effective, up to date anomymiser, compatible with my computer.

Good ratings in speed, anonymity, logging. Offering updates to avoid buying new edition every 6 months.

Happy to buy. If possible would like to experiment with free edition to see which is best for me, my computer and ISP in Australia.

Appreciate advice or comment from members on the best ( free or not ) suitable
software for an old computer dummy riding a dated P4.

Greyowl.

If you want something that will really work try TOR or The Amnesic Incognito Live System (TAILS)

Welcome to the forum B Carson.

As this is a freeware forum, only free versions of software will be discussed here. We do not discuss commercial versions. Just a note in advance.

Totally agree

Thanks Anupam,

Some of the above anonymisers were profiled and discussed in Gizmo. Reframe Question -

What Is The Best Freeware Anonymiser ?

Welcome advice and comments on the points I have raised above for the appropriate Anonymiser for me and my gear. Fast, effective, easy to use - for a tech dummy.

Tried TOR years ago. Couldn't get it to work.
As for TAILS, never seen any reference to it. Will read up.

I like using vpn for anonymiser since i dont have to run a seperate program and it's generally safer. plus its easy to connect/disconnect

For the Tor network I use Advanced Onion Router (Used to be advanced tor). It can open any program and then force it to use the tor network.

TorChat is good for chatting on the tor network.

Thanks eyeb.

I figure simplest way for anonymous surfing is to hide IP as key element
Most are reported to slow down browsing so I would like it to easily switch on /off

VPN is general term - Open VPN, VPNSurfing, StrongVPN, PureVPN, ExpressVPN etc.
So many. Which have you used ? OK with FF4 ? FF8 ?.

Any opinion or experience with
TAILS 0.9, Amnesic Incognito Live System CD, TOR Browsing Bundle.

Jondonym Live CD - not much written about this in English.

Should I run JondoFox on FF4 in conjunction with one of the above ?
Will it slow browsing too much ?

Other opinions ?

B Carson
Assume I know nothing and you won't be disappointed.

I use 2 vpns, the speeds are fairly good. They don't allow p2p like torrents because of illegal downloading... but you wouldn't need p2p anyways if you are using it for security reasons, not illegal reasons :D

VPNReactor has a free package, not great for full time use since it has a 30 minute time limit but good enough for online banking

VPN On Demand is another good free one that I like. This one has no limitations that I know off, except maybe p2p, i never tried torrents on vpn since I know they generally don't allow it

https://www.vpnreactor.com/

i wouldn't worry much about running tor on top of vpn... I mean for privacy the vpn covers it to a degree, it is more for secure connection when on public network though but it hides your ip too. Tor/proxies just make your ip jump around after a set amount of time so it makes it harder to track. Again, not much of a concern unless you plan to do illegal things

edit: skip that firefox tor thing, the jundofox or whatever and just download the onion router. If you want firefox on tor, open it via that and it's on tor. No need installing addons to firefox or having a separate firefox just for tor

If your main concern is simply to hide your IP address then the simplest option may be to browse using startpage as your search engine (it's powered by Google but without the privacy issues).
When the results of your search are listed, each has a link saying "View by Ixquick Proxy" on the last line, click that and it automatically takes you to the webpage via a proxy. Job done.
