BufferZone Pro no longer free
 

BufferZone Pro was offered as a 1 yr free giveaway and Jan 30, 2011 was the last day it was supposed to be free. All licenses for the Pro version that were issued under this offering were supposed to have been retired a few days ago.

I have it installed on one of my 3 PCs and I noticed that it is still operational (XP system only). I opened FF and expected the red border to have disappeared, but it was still there.

The BZ forum have no announcements regarding the Pro version giveaway program having been extended or changed. Hmmmm maybe they are waiting to see how many people buy the product (that is they liked it and are willing to pay for it), before they pull the plug.

I must say that I though it was OK, though I do like SBIE a lot more. If they had have fixed the bookmark problem then I may have given them a thumbs up. However, with a full year to address this problem with no solution in sight, they have lost my interest. They never did provide a 64bit offering as far as I know.

Interesting to see what happens over the next few days.

I believe they keeping it free indefinitely. If you have it installed now it will
remain functional for at least a year, its not going to change. Anybody that
wants to install it now, it can.
Like you I like SBIE better so I have not installed it but I have read all
there is to read about it and it seems like a very nice program that its
easy to use and learn.
emmjay, I have not been able to find info about whether programs like FF
can be edited from the list of programs that will run in Buffer Zone automatically.
Can you tell me if I edit FF from that list, will this change remain after a reboot
or will it go back to the list. If I am able to take out my browsers completely
out of the Buffer Zone programs list, I would install it. Because of Sandboxie
I would never use Buffer Zone for my browsers but I can see benefits that
I can get out of using Buffer Zone. I just don't want to use it with browsers.
I ll appreciated if you can answer this for me.

Hi Bo,
Yes you can take a browser outside of BZ either temporarily or permanently.

If you have several browsers installed and you want to temporarily open a browser outside of BZ, right click on the browser and select 'open outside Bufferzone' and that will be good until you close it.

To take it out permanently, open the GUI and Under Summary you will see Edit Programs. There you will get a list, just select the browsers you want to remove.
Those browsers will open outside BZ from then on even after a reboot.

I don't know about other folk Bo, but i encountered some problems having SBIE and BZ installed on the same machine, and this ultimately resulted in my having to remove BZ and reinstall both SBIE and Firefox because neither of them would work properly. I the end i removed BZ and went back to using SBIE.

Hi garth, thanks for the advice. Potential problems like you mention is what has
kept me from installing Buffer Zone. I know it can not replace SBIE, thats why
I would not even try it with my browsers but maybe it can also corrupt other
programs if it creates problems like you had. Thanks garth, nice advice that
makes me think a little better.

Bo, I also agree with Garth. These 2 applications by their very nature should not be installed at the same time on a system. It is just common sense that they would clash. I have BZ only on XP because it is so light. It works well there. On my other 2 systems I use SBIE.

I think BZ is good for someone who wants to have their system hardened but is not interested in doing a lot of tweaking. The GUI is very straight forward and not at all complicated. When it cuts over to paid .. well it gets no more attention from us here at Gismo ... and it will be up to the individual user to determine if they want to continue to use it as a commercial application.

Give it a whirl while it is still freeware. I think it is worth checking out.

I did like BufferZone while i was using it, and it certainly allows a browser to open up faster than SBIE, but like most of you guys i'm always testing new/different apps and fiddling about with stuff on my machine, and for this i prefer Sandboxie because it is just easier to use imo.

BZ, I still have not decided what to do but most likely will not try it. My SBIE
and Firefox works so nice that I am always a little restless if I trysomething
that might break either one.

There is an announcement today on the BufferZone Community website that BufferZone Pro is now freeware. Free licenses are available from their main site www.trustware.com

As far as I can tell, there still is no support for 64 bit versions of Windows.

If you are having trouble finding your licensing ID and serial number for BufferZone Pro, open the Tutorial and you will see it in the URL information (in the address bar).
It does not show up anywhere on the GUI.

It is almost a shame I don't still use windows as my primary os, so that I could benifit a bit more personally from good things like this. But there are always my friends and family.

Now listed as freeware on Softpedia too so this looks like a permanent move.
