Java Runtime 6 update 19

A new version of Java Runtime : version 6 update 19, has been released with security fixes, and other changes. All are advised to update to the latest version of the JRE, and be safe :).

I checked for updates via the Java control panel applet and it told me I already had the latest version. I had to download and install the new version manually.

Not the first time this has been the case.

I personally keep the Java update feature off. I do not like it checking for new versions at regular intervals. Anyways, the new versions are released in quite a bit of time, so no meaning in keeping it on.

I have subscribed to RSS feeds of several download sites, and blogs, so that's how I keep track of updated softwares :).

I noticed though, this version does not have the update feature. Atleast, I did not find it in the Java Control Panel... is that tab missing for everyone? I was quite surprised to find it missing.

This is a good thing to keep up to date. :)

I found this nice little tool for checking for JRE updates as well as removing older versions. Its called JavaRa.

I have it on my weekly things to do list.

JavaRa is used mainly to remove Java, as it can get difficult to remove sometimes. I personally did not have any problem in uninstalling Java from the Add/Remove programs, till now. I did not know JavaRa was used to check for updates too. Nice information.

The automatic update only checks for updates on the 17th of each month according to my java control panel so obviously it wouldn't have informed me for a long time yet, but there is a button on the tab to "check now" which is what I used, only for it to tell me I had the latest update already - which I didn't!

The update tab is still there for me in this latest version.

I dislike the update feature of Java, and I keep it off, so I wouldn't know about it.

Strange, I don't know why, but there is no update tab in the Java Control Panel. That's odd! I think I will have to reinstall it.

This is my sad story of attempts to update to Java Runtime 6 update 18 from 17:

I use OpenOffice which comes with Java and requires Java (for running even elementary recorded macros).

So OO.o 3.2 installed perfectly with Java on one computer. I later got the itch to install the portable version of OO.o 3.2 with Java and that also went smoothly on the same PC. After reading here that update 19 is out, I downloaded and updated version 19 without any problem.

However, with another PC, it's just one failure after another:
  • with the JRE that came with OO.o 3.2
  • with the portable version or with a direct download from the Java site (got some reg.dll error)
  • or by trying to install an offline version as suggested by Java (but the installer claimed falsely that the latest version is already installed)...
All the errors I got have been experienced by some other unfortunates. Registry clean-up, removing all traces of Java (but I renamed the one working Java directory containing JRE 17 so as not to lose it), use of JavaRa, etc., nothing convinced the Java installer that I don't have the latest version installed. (I had JRE 17 and wanted to update to JRE 18).

Anyone has encountered problems updating and has some tips for me?

I'm downloading JRE 19 (jre-6u19-windows-i586.exe 15.5 MB) now from Softpedia via Firefox because my net connection on this PC is dodgy and FF now facilitates resume downloads. If I try to download from Java.com and the net drops, it's back to zero for me.

I will keep a systematic note of the error wording which I'm sure to see again :o

Installation went perfectly. The JRE 19 is seen by both Firefox and by OpenOffice. Perhaps, the threat of TSA minds focusing on the issue was enough :D

Update Java on my computer again using JavaRa. Did a real nice job. It then removed the older version. Completed both tasks in a couple of minutes :)

Cheers
