Default Vote For The Best Download Site

I created a list of the most informative top download lists, but now I'd like to know your favorite place to download free software. Use whatever criteria you feel is most important.

The following list is not for the best places to download; it is just a list of whether the Top Download lists on download sites are informative. It's the genesis for the poll, though, as well as Gizmo's Freeware list of best download sites. And if you know the weekly number of downloads for the top software, you can better determine the site's popularity.

Here is my list of the Most Informative Top Download Lists*:
*These are ranked by number of weekly downloads (if applicable) and quality of information provided.

1. Download.com/CNET (#1 has over two million weekly downloads; by far the best information setup: includes user ratings, editor's ratings, total number of downloads by previous week, total number of weeks on the Top 50 chart, total number of downloads, and date added for the newest product version! And if you click you get: a publisher description, user reviews, an editor's review sometimes, etc.)
2. Softpedia.com (#1 has just over a hundred thousand weekly downloads; includes user ratings; if you click it has user reviews, sometimes an editor's review, product description, total downloads, etc.)
3. MajorGeeks.com (#1 has less than a hundred thousand weekly downloads; includes user ratings but must click first; has editor picks but scattered everywhere; has a list of Top Freeware Picks nearby but does not match with editor picks)

Other Less Informative Top Download Lists* (*Alphabetical order):
  • CleanSofts.org (number of downloads unknown)
  • FileForum-Betanews.com (#1 seems based on total downloads; includes user ratings)
  • FileHippo.com (number of downloads unknown)
  • FreewareFiles.com (#1 seems based on total downloads; includes user ratings but must click first; has an editor's choice list nearby)
  • kaldata.net (#1 seems based on total downloads; includes user ratings)
  • NoNags.com (requires membership to view; didn't include for that reason)
  • Snapfiles.com (number of downloads unknown; includes user ratings and a user's choice list nearby)
  • Tucows.com (number of downloads unknown; includes excellent editor "cow" ratings if you click)

I made this list at the end of this post:

You should have made the poll a multiple choice one, coz I like more than one site .

All the sites mentioned are known to me. I came to know about kaldata.net quite recently. And since then, it has been my favorite download site. Mainly because it is updated quickly, and many times throughout the day. And also, many of the freewares are mentioned on the site.
The other sites that I like are majorgeeks and freeware-files. But, these are updated during certain part of the day, evening and night here in my time-zone.

Nonags is not being updated regularly, and I have lost interest in that site.

I thought about it. But I wanted to force voters to make a choice on their absolute favorite!

I always used MajorGeeks and tend to use it just because I'm used to it (they actually have a pretty good RSS feed too), but I've been branching out little by little.

Hopefully setting the poll like this will also get more people to post comments! Comments are more helpful anyways. I noticed my music player poll isn't very helpful yet.

I didn't notice NoNags not being updated; perhaps we should replace it with CleanSofts.org?

Ahhh, nice trick to invite comments from users. Leave them with a single choice poll, so that they write about the ones left out in the comments. Good one .
Apart from MajorGeeks, FreewareFiles is nice too... coz its a site on only freewares, and its quite a nice site.

About the music player poll... what I think is, there are quite a number of choices there. Many people would not be having, or would not have used, all of the music players listed there. That's why the comments must be less. Just my thought.

Yes, nonags is not being updated. I visited the site after months, and there are still old versions of the programs being shown on the site. Out of my bookmarks!
Haven't heard about cleansofts.org... will have a look. Thanks.

I would have to say that FileHippo is my favorite because yes, it doesn't have as wide of a selection as the others, but it hosts only the best programs. Not all of them are freeware but the majority is. I like Download.com because of the vast array of apps (just like the rest), I like MajorGeeks.com because I can check their main page for program updates and I like Softpedia for its easy-to-navigate interface. I do not like SnapFiles, only because I have to wait to download a file (a mere 5 seconds or so) but still.

Like a lot of people, I tend to go for the ones which are the most popular as this indicates to me that there's "safety in numbers". That's why, having posts on the forum is so helpful especially to people who are a bit unsure.

I have used download .com for most of my downloads. I try to be site specific for most but when directed to one I don't know I will opt to my standby c-net.
