GMX has been able to see its email customer count surge rapidly during the past years and its FreeMail currently hosts about 11 million active users in Germany, Australia, Switzerland and the UK.

Yes I saw the Hot find. I didn't know that Yahoo didn't have POP access.
Thanks for the login problem. Hope that will help.

The POP access is restricted to paid-for Yahoo Mail Plus. Who will go for that when there're much better free options?

I stopped using Mail after creating my account. Though I still occasionally use my Yahoo account for Flickr, Yahoo Answers and Yahoo Pipes.

After several days of trying out GMX I found several usability problems. As usual I used the Opera IMAP client as I do with Gmail. Quite a few times the client was unable to login into GMX which were mostly fixed by trying again. Never had this problem with Gmail. Their forum reported similar issues with different clients including their web client.
Another issue was that one particular email Opera even failed to parse and read. Perhaps they were sending some malformed mail? Again never had this problem with Gmail. I have decided that I wouldn't trust GMX with important emails.
Their forums reported a wide variety of issues. Several users are apparently locked out for days which is usually fixed by writing to a support email but again it takes days. The GMX people don't reply often on the forums. One extreme incident that took place was the GMX support asking for a driving license or similar id to restore an locked account! The issue though was not one of fraud but rather a bureaucratic issue one often finds with large ISPs (GMX is run by Germany's largest ISP.)
These issues are quite sad because I rather liked the features and privacy being provided. I would not trust GMX with any important email though I would continue using it for small needs across the web.

I tried for 2-3 days to make an account on GMX, but was unsuccessful, because of problems at their end. Looking at sa1's post, I think I am better off without account at GMX.

You might like Fastmail

I've been using it since 2003. It keeps getting better every year and I eventually moved
from the free account to the $5 per year account because I guess I'm just a big
spender. ;-)

The various account levels are compared here.

Who would pay for an email service, when excellent free email services are available like Gmail.

Maybe somebody who doesn't like advertising all over the web page
and "conversations" instead of folders.
