Opera 55
Opera 55 offers better control of web pages and more accessible bookmarks;

New layout of settings page with dark theme support - Better control of the pages you visit with an expanded badge pop-up menu - Easy installation of Chrome extensions - Easier access to your bookmarks - Opera 55 includes Chromium version 68.0.3440.106.

In this latest version they've (once again) removed the option to set your own default search. You can only set one of the pre-loaded search engines as default. Opera must be the only browser that doesn't allow this now. Why that is, I don't know, but it's not good.

You should also now be able to install extensions directly from the Chrome Store with one click - so far, after updating the browser, it won't let me do that. The button shows 'available in chrome' and clicking it takes you to the Chrome download page. Maybe I'm doing something wrong so I'll have a tinker about and see if I can get it to work.

Don't know what it is with these guys at the moment. For me, there are more useless features and less useful options.

Not a good move Opera!

Well, it seems to me that the new extensions feature is to install the extension that allows you to install extensions from the Chrome Store - if that makes any sense, and it probably doesn't because most people have been doing that for years. I've read the description over and over on the blog post and still can make head nor tail of it. Using that extension, I've always been able to add extensions from the Chrome Store so how can it be a new feature? Utter rubbish.

I don't know what they're up to. The search engine saga is a joke, and on opening the browser after clearing the cache etc. I got the spam speed dial tiles - again. This issue was supposed to have been fixed but no, they keep on loading advert tiles for sites I have zero interest in.

In the comments section on their blog they're actually telling people to go into flags and alter settings to rectify issues that users are having. This, in the Stable version, not the Developer or Beta versions. I don't get it, it shouldn't happen.

I always have an alternative browser to fall back on if things at Opera start going through a dodgy patch, which they do from time to time, so I'll make more use of that for a while 'til Opera get their act back together. But I'm not sure they will. They seem, to me, to be being driven down the money making marketing route more and more. Maybe the NASDAQ listing has something to do with it. I suspect it does, and if that's the case they can go whistle because I'm not interested.

So no, not a good move at all.

Opera 55.0.2994.44 Stable update;

Haven't looked at latest, but Opera Touch now offers a list of various search engines to choose from.
Don't see how to add your own but at least DuckDuckGo is on there.

deya 31. Aug 2018 10:51 PM

DuckDuckGo is one of the pre-installed search engines in Opera Stable as well and you can set it as default, which is good if you use it but I don't use it often. You should be able to use and set as default the SE of your choice, but you can't. Other browsers allow you do it. It makes no sense to me.

They allow you to do it in one build, then in the next build they take the option away. It's nuts.

Opera 55.0 on Q4OS KDE is practically equal to Edge at cold start and just as good if not even better than Edge at page rendering!
I mean, barely over a second for Opera at most!
Have never seen other browsers do this.

The Opera Android version is pretty cool too!
Have removed Edge all together there, there (Firefox is next)!

Forgot to mention that i work on an HP EliteBook 8460p 8G RAM with SSD and that Opera 55.0 is super quiet (no CPU fan running for nothing like Win 10).
