Task manager show Opera 53 beta using 350k-400k memory max.
Firefox is usually twice that and much and more (1,200k).
Even with heavy pages such as nhl.com Opera is still best at mem usage as well as with lower cpu.
Vivaldi is higher than Opera in those respects but not as bad as Firefox.

Opera 53.0.2907.68 Stable update;

https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2018...stable-update/

I also use the Developer version of Opera which now, among with other changes, has a new styled settings page. Not sure if I prefer it to the original settings page yet, but no doubt it'll change before they release it in the Stable version - and you can't use the konami code to enable the power user settings with it, but it doesn't really matter about that anyway. It's the same now, all but for one setting.

What you can do though, is add and set a search engine of your choice as default search - something you've not been able to do before with Opera. You can also remove the pre-installed search engines from the list, Google etc. This is something I've been hoping they'd do for a long time. You can also enable the new settings page in the Stable version via the flags/experiments, if anyone wants to try it. It works fine.

You can also enable a text tool for the snapshot editor (via flags) which is also a welcome addition to the snapshot tool.

I'm hoping that soon they'll allow you to use a different search engine with the Instant Search feature, instead of the default Google. I've tried doing it by messing around with the new settings page but the browser crashes .... so I still live in hope on that one.

Good to see some nice changes on the way though.

Opera 53.0.2907.88 Stable update;

https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2018...stable-update/

"Today’s update for Opera 53 stable fixes an issue with Speed Dial folders doubling unexpectedly on the start page. Folders in your Speed Dial could have been duplicated if there was a server change or if the user added and rearranged folders then restarted the browser.

The fix for this bug will first be implemented for our Ukrainian users, where the problem frequently occurred. Upon its success in Ukraine, the fix will later be rolled out globally" ....

Opera 53.0.2907.99 Stable update;

... basically, it's the update to fix the same issues in the above post which was rolled to Ukrainian users first, and is now being released to everyone else.

Opera 53.0.2907.106 Stable update;

https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2018...stable-update/

It states in the blog post that "With this version, we’re turning on the bookmarks bar by default" but that wasn't the case for me after the update. The bookmarks bar remained disabled, which is how I have it set. Not sure why that is, maybe it's only enabled if you do a fresh install and not an over the top install, which is the way I did it. Either way, you can turn it off by following the method provided in the blog post.

How odd .... after posting the above, then messing about with uTube for a while, the bookmarks bar suddenly appeared in the browser - without any prompting from me whatsoever. There were also a few bookmarks added to the bar, eBay etc. Dunno why that would be but anyway, I deleted the unwanted bookmarks and disabled the bookmarks bar via settings.

Looks like they're trying a new way to slip ads into the browser .... but fair enough, they're easy to get rid of.
