Whaaat?? I am a Thunderbird user, and nobody has tried to jack me up for money. I always use the latest and I don't find it's erratic either. I am using Thunderbird in both Linux and Windows, although I use the portable version in the latter.

How come nobody is trying to stick me up for money?

Same here using with Linux and Windows. Only recent problem was not being able to sign in to Google accounts with 45.8.0. (Linux) A forced update to 52.1.0 via ppa fixed it. (best to disable this ppa again after the upgrade).

I think the 'money' aspect might relate to the welcome window when you set up a new account. If you follow the 'offer' service instructions it will direct to commercial services. It's necessary to 'skip' this and use an existing email address instead.

Default further info

Many of you who are long time users of thunderbird have said that there is no splash screen asking for money and its true the same for me but all people with a new setup who finally moved from xp and are using thunderbird on win 7 to 10 are being asked for donations on a splash screen , The seniors are finding difficult to close and the internet is talking about this problem. I noticed tech radar has dropped thunderbird to 5th place now I think Ill put my clients on eM client . They are all over 70 yrs old ( like me) and are looking for a simple email program to update to

Looks like freeware version of eM Cient is restricted to only two email accounts which may be limiting for some?

Personally I've been happy using Opera Mail for many years now and find it very easy and clear to set up and use.
In comparison Thunderbird seems more confusing and cluttered to me... and I'm under 70!
I don't believe this is soley due to familiarity with the former.

May be another option to consider for some users?

Have a look at EssentialPIM Free.
It includes an email client.
