I am using Firefox 14.0.4. I would like to change to Firefox ESR - 38.6.0esr. Do you think I can simply download it without un-installing 14.0.4, so that it will overwrite it? If the answer is 'yes', would my bookmarks be retained or deleted?

Thank you

Melita, I think this thread should answer you questions. Just in case, it is also a good idea to back up your profile as suggested in the thread.

[Time to split the recent conversation off?]

I'd be very surprised if a profile from FF14, which might have been created several versions earlier, would work without any bugs in FF24 or later. I'd create a new profile with the firefox =p switch as a backup for 14. Then close 14 and copy the profiles somewhere safe.

Install ESR to a new location (C:\Program Files\ESR Firefox\ ?), start it in another fresh profile and name it ESR - you don't want the wrong FF version corrupting the other profile.

You might be able to copy over some parts of the old profile whilst FF is closed but certain file names have changed (one/both of the two/three password files uses a different type/name now) and I'm unsure whether ESR would handle old file names of that era. Recovering data from an old profile and here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferri...file_-_Firefox

With the same profile, Melita? If so, anything buggy?

No satrow, different Profiles. FF14 was installed by a friend in C: Program Files (86), when I lent the laptop to him for a couple of weeks, some years back. I let that remain as it is and installed a later version in C: Program Files with a different Profile, and have been updating it and come up to FF40. This what I habitually use. I thought I will install ESR in place of FF14 and see how it will work out.

Give it a go, Melita. Write down your strategy first so you have the details to hand should you bump into a glitch somewhere.

Bookmarks should be easy to transfer, export them from 14 as the default type (I think it's html) and them import them into ESR should the upgrade not pick them up automatically.

It's done. FF ESR installed and running well. Thank you satrow for all the help and encouragement :)

Excellent, good work, Melita :)

I can return to the kitchen to top up my Zubrowka with a clear conscience and still ~35 minutes of my birthday left - chin chin!
