Default Suddenly can't download HD youtube videos

Hi.

Previously I have downloaded videos off youtube using the firefox extentions Video Download Helper and Flashgot. I'm not talking about copyright material, just standard videos that people have uploaded. But as of today I can only download medium definition version of videos even though I can watch them in HD. Video Download Helper does offer to download in HD still, but says that I need to install a "converter". Flashgot does not even offer the HD versions but does let me download the same video in medium def. I even tried downloading HD versions of videos that I have recently downloaded but I no longer can.

Has youtube recently changed something because I tried a different site and had no problems?

I would appreciate any help thanks.

Until recently I was a big fan of Video Download Helper but after the new version got released a few weeks ago, I dont like the addon anymore. I used it for years. So, I can tell you, every once in a while something gets broken in YouTube after YouTube make changes in their site. Thats probably whats happening now. I can also tell you that usually when that happens, it gets fixed very quickly.

If you don't want to wait for the fix, you can try this addon, this is the one that I am using now. Is simple, it works well and it doesnt get on your way like the new annoying version of Download Helper.

For downloading a 1080p or 480p video you need a "merger/converter" to merge audio and video together. You can use FFMpeg for the same, or use an external download manager like EagleGet, which merges it automatically for you, if you've FFMPeg enabled.

Were you able to download HD videos previously?

George, he doesn't need a merger/converter or external download managers to download high quality videos from YouTube. It can even be done without addons or programs.

imfimity, I just tested Download helper. It is working fine for downloading quality videos. No need to convert nothing. There is a new version that got released on the 31 of March. Make sure you got that version (Video DownloadHelper 5.1.2).

This could have been the problem because it's working ok now, at least flashgot is, I haven't tried video download helper yet. I am also not a big fan of the new version, perhaps i'll get used to it.

Thanks to everone for the help.

YouTube does not use standard MP4 files for their 1080p/480p videos. They use the DASH format. The audio and video are stored as separate files. Some software's/add-on's does the merging work automatically while others do not, but you definitely need to merge them together unlike downloading in other qualities like 360p or 720p.

True. I usually only download in resolutions higher than 720p so the recent updates to VideoDownloadHelper make it much more useful by displaying a longer list of available download formats. Those that require converters are indicated and you can choose to download them.
