Default Network File sharing

Im not that experienced in network file sharing. I have used windows 7 homegroup to share files. But im looking for a way to share through a network.

I have some movies pictures ect on a external hard drive that is connected to a home pc I have shared it through windows 7 homegroup to allow my laptop to connect when im at home on the network. But i heard about a program FreeNAS which from my understanding allows you to set a ip address to the drive to connect to it from any network. But it installs it though a operating system.

I would like to keep the windows 7 os on my home system as it connects to netflix on my main TV screen. Im not that clued up on the whole install process of FreeNas just what ive seen from tutorials.

Is there a way i can run windows 7 but set the external HD up so that i can connect to it in a similar way to freenas through i ip address? So if im at another computer i can connect to it?

im looking downl this route on purpose, I know of systems like FTP or teamviewer.

Thanks

Just to update people. I had a old BT home Hub 4 router laying around that had a USB port on it. I have attached the external drive to it and mapped a network share on both my systems to get access to the drive. It all works good so far. When i log into the router i ca see the connected device but it doesn't show me a ip address of the drive. I can access the drive on the network by going to 192.168.1.254 But i would assume that the drive would be associated a ip address.
