I found the problem between Firefox and Notepad++.

The problem with article editing is due to the Firefox encoding. At some stage in the recent upgrades, (probably v28), Firefox defaulted to Western even if the web page encoding was different.

To return it to Unicode I had to open the Firefox settings menu and customize it. The Character Encoding feature had to be added to the menu or toolbar. As soon as that is done then the default character encoding automatically changed from Western to Unicode.

The problem with Word and Notepad++ is more complicated and I'll have to look at how Word handles the encoding.
