This is what I see and do when I download something: After clicking "Save file", I click Tools>Downloads and my Download windows opens up in another tab. When Mozilla placed the little download button (whatever is called) on the top right side of the browser, I got rid of that thing immediately. Thats why I suggested earlier to Anupam to do a clean install of an earlier version, change whatever you want and then do an over the top installation of the latest version or click Help>About Firefox>Check for updates. Yes, CTRL-J is just the default keyboard shortcut. There are three routes to open the same thing and one could also make a custom toolbar button for it to save a click or two.
Curious though that your downloads open in a new tab, mine open in the Library window whatever route I take to get there. Which is fine, I like it like that and don't want a new tab just for downloads ... I'm just wondering what's different : ) Myself I like the new toolbar downloads button, it's a very quick way to check progress, pause/restart, open etc without opening other dialogues and so on. Like you my first reaction was to bin it but I decided to give it a proper chance after I installed 26... I'm trying FF without All in One Sidebar as I can't see the dev being inclined to rewrite the add on for this latest round of code changes ... I've not been using the sidebar at all this week and while it feels a bit weird it definitely works. |

Haha yes : ) Must admit that while I like the actual button and pop-out, that animation is really annoying and there seems to be no easy way to disable it. I found some mention of a CSS script that might do it.

Aha! :-D
If anyone else is irritated by the Download Started/Completed animation then you can disable it using the add-on Configuration Mania I daresay it would be possible to work out how the add-on achieves this but it's quite a useful one to have anyway. |

Another annoyance with Download Manager is that it does not show the Pause button, whether in the small window, or the big. I thought they removed the option. But, the Pause option is there which is available via right click over the download. I don't know why they are complicating simple things. They have really made a mess of the download manager.

Most of you are aware that I dumped Firefox a couple months ago for Maxthon. I absolutely love Maxthon's speed. It is by far the fastest browser I've ever used.
However, it still has a few bugs that "bug" me. And, I've been missing Firefox. However, it absolutely takes FOREVER to load on both my home and work computer. It just feels so "bloated". So, I got inspired to try the portable version of Firefox 26. Maybe it's because I've always done an "over the top" installation of Firefox, but portable Firefox 26 is blazingly fast! I've added 3 extensions/add-ons: WOT, LastPass, and X-Marks. It still opens extremely fast and renders pages very fast. (In fact, I'm using it to type this post.) For those of you not happy with this version 26, I'd encourage you to try out the portable version. (If you aren't already using it.) One nice thing is/was the ability to copy your installed version of Firefox into the portable version. You can find the portable version here: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable

I have always been happy with Firefox, and it works great for me. It only takes a few seconds for Firefox to open in Windows 8/8.1. And the page rendering is fast too.
Maybe you should try uninstalling Firefox totally, including deleting its folders in Program Files, and App Data, etc, and then reinstall it again. Should make a difference.
