Firefox 20 has been released and is available for download on the official Mozilla site.

There are some new features in this release, of per-window private browsing, and new download manager interface being the main.

Full release notes here:

I will be download and do a fresh install.

Updated just now...New download window is okay, however, not quite ready for it, so sticking with the old one with the help of the status 4 evar addon.

For those who want the old download manager:

  • Type about:config into the Firefox address bar and hit the enter key afterwards.
  • Confirm that you will be careful if you open this page for the first time.
  • Type the following parameters into the search form at the top
  • browser.download.useToolkitUI - This turns the new download panel on or off. The default setting is false which means that it is turned on. Double-click the entry to set it to true and turn off the new download manager.

hm, nice tip CU. I guess I like both the old window and the new icon.

I was using download status bar addon so I could see if anything was downloading and how far it was. Now I don't need it and I keep window

edit: I also like the private tab addon that works in firefox 20 letting me use private mode on individual tabs. I don't use it much but better than having another window open when I do

edit: not 100% sure but it seems a bit speedier than 19 but with all my addons, I can't really say

@eyeb: You read my mind! I was kind of hoping that Firefox would implement per tab browsing instead of per window browsing..and yes, I just installed the private tab addon and so far so good.

Did a fresh install after of Firefox. So much stuff to do now installation. Before that, take backup with FEBE, of preferences, bookmarks, passwords, extensions. After installation, installing the extensions, passwords again, and setting up the extensions again, and restoring bookmarks with XMarks. Then, from about:config, enabling Click to Play option, and also of warn about tabs to save when quitting. Plus, a few more of my personal settings... phew!

If anyone noticed, there is a new tab in the Advanced tab of the Options, for "Data Choices", which shows you what data to send to Mozilla. I think that's a good change by Mozilla.

I didn't like the new download manager sadly. I find the old download manager much better. First off, this download manager takes up another icon in the bar. Also, the small download window does not show the speed of download... that can only be seen in the bigger download manager window. Also, earlier download manager had a Pause button, but I can't see any with this one .. that's not a good change.

The bigger download manager opens up as a separate window. It would have been better, if it opened as a separate tab.

I will use this new download manager a few more times, and if I still don't like it, I think I will be going back to the old style.

how odd, I can't use both the "browser.download.useToolkitUI" setting for the old window while still having the download icon showing the status of the download

took me until now to figure it out :S

@ Anupam: You could try out an addon like status 4 evar if you're interested in getting the "old" look back (status bar, download manager etc..).

This is what my current setup looks like:

BTW, did you try the "about: config" hack for the download manager? Did that work out?

CU, I don't get the need for "Status 4 Evar". The status bar which appears below can be made to appear or disappear from Firefox itself, without the need for any extension. The option is accessible from Firefox orange button --> Options --> Add-on bar.

I haven't tried the about:config setting to get back the old download manager yet. I will do so after trying out the new one for more amount of time. But, I think eyeb has done so, and has been successful. Though he finds that the icon does not go from the navigation bar. However, it can be made to go via Customize option.

Is it just me, or is the pause button really missing from the new download manager. It's quite strange, because the old download manager used to have a pause button, but the new one does not. Why would they go backwards?

I think time to change to the old one.
