Mike, I know about this, and it's not really what I wanted.

I care more about locations than files, and the recent files list doesn't track location usage separately from the file that was saved.

What the utility I'm attempting to replace does is: it keeps track of used files and locations, and it does so per app, so if I save a spreadsheet in Excel it remembers the last x places I saved spreadsheets but doesn't bother telling me where I saved a document I edited with a different application.

I'm currently playing with FileBox Extender, and it's sort of helpful in that I can save the current folder location to a configurable favourites list that's instantly available to me in most file dialogs but it doesn't filter by app and needs a fair amount of handholding before it gives me what I want, so I haven't given up looking yet.

Your comments to MilesAhead do rather miss this point, I think. For people who only create a few files occasionally, and only in a few places, XP's "recent" functionality is okay, but for me, it's just not even close to what I need.

Both programs I mentioned above will track recent locations by app.

Okay, you convinced me.

DirectFolders looks good, so I'll try that first. Thanks.

Just as a note for anyone who might be wondering what I eventually decided on: while FileBox Extender is a little idiosyncratic about what it does and how it works, I found it to be the closest to what I was after and, although it definitely has shortcomings (sometimes it's not very good at recognising the current folder in some dialogs so adding the current folder to the favourites list can sometimes be harder than it should be!) once it started taking shape for me, I now find it to be all but indispensable!

Thanks to everyone who helped with this little problem.
