Default Notepad like editor with built-in version save on exit

Hello

I often use notepad because it's fast, uncluttered, and easy to use. However there's a feature I wish it had. That is, I'd like to be able to save a new version of the text file I'm working on, and have it automatically append the date and time. I know I can "Save As" and add that information, but it's tedious. I guess it's called "versioning" or something similar, and I believe word processors have that feature.

So, does anyone know of a text editor like Notepad but having built-in file "versioning" save.

If there's no "text editor", maybe a "Lite" word processor with the function I'm seeking.

I'm using Windows 8.0

pretty sure the notepad++ can as well but i stuck with editpad since I came across it first and never bothered switching
