I'm looking for a freeware program to convert f4f video files to a common format like flv, mp4, etc

Have you tried the products recommended in Best Free Audio-Video Conversion Program? I remember using one of the FF... products that did it but I don't think it is FFCoder which is the only one listed in the current review.

This Adobe forum thread suggests:

it’s the F4VPostProcessor (which, by the way, was erroneously named FV4PostProcessor) that does f4f conversion to mp4, like this: f4vpp –I livestreamSeg1.f4f –o out.mp4.
