Default CutePDF warning

I just installed the newest free CutePDF writer. There are two boxes that are checked by default to install the Ask toolbar and search. But even if you uncheck these, Ask will be installed behind your back. Be warned!

We make this clear in our main page review details.
Using the free version of WinPatrol will enable you to block these changes.
A good third party firewall will enable you to block the initial outgoing connection to Ask.

I confirm the findings posted by the OP.

I installed CutePdf in virtualized environment using TimeFreeze. I was careful during the installation, and I carefully unselected the Ask Toolbar options.

There was no trace of Ask Toolbar on Firefox, but it was there in IE10. A toolbar, and a BHO object were added. Also, a separate folder for Ask was created in Program Files, and in Program Data folder. A whole lot of files were there in the Program Files folder for Ask.

This is really unacceptable behavior. This should not happen when the user is choosing to opt out. Maybe we should write to CutePdf complaining about this.

Because of this behavior, maybe we should downgrade its ratings a lot, or even remove it from the review. This is really unacceptable.

I fully support Anupam's suggestions. Any software that continues to install unwanted add-ons even though you opt out, is untrustworthy. It does not warrant mention on Gizmo's no matter how good it is. This site has it's reputation to upkeep.

Sure we could write and complain, but I suggest it should be removed from Gizmo's first! There shouldn't be any hesitation about that. We shouldn't continue to let others find out the hard way that it's untrustworthy. If the developer replies with a plausible excuse and make amends, we could then reconsider.

I have sent a message to CutePdf team about this, via the contact option on their site. I have also written about removal of CutePdf from review on the site, because of this behavior. Let's see what they reply.

Thanks Anupam. I would normally have followed this route automatically but my internet was all over the place yesterday so I was being selective with what I did whilst still connected.

Thanks for the quick work guys. Although I don't use CutePdf, it would be interesting to hear what their response will be. Do let us know if you get a reply Anupam.
