Here I am late to the party as usual, but I thought I would chime in as this really confused me. While there are VGA to DVI adapters, that is because DVI carries the VGA signal for compatibility with the older signal format. And, DVI and HDMI carry the same signal, the same digital signal: it is no problem with adapters used repeatedly. So, while you could kludge up a VGA to DVI to HDMI hookup, you won't get anything out the end, the wires carrying the analog signal will die at the DVI adapter.

Curiosity as to how this worked described above got me to pour over the HDMI spec, confirming NO analog signal. So, googling I found this in the description of one of these VGA-HDMI cables offered by Amazon:

Your Video card must support digital signal output through VGA port function. Please consult with your VGA card's user manual for more information.
Makes sense, I have no idea if this is common, will have to look into for my HP lappy which sadly only has a VGA ext monitor port. Curiosity drives one to distraction sometimes, I feel sad for all those who have lost theirs, why go on?
you must be joking, oh man you must be joking
