Some good findings there by you, 26Dolphins . This sure seems to be a bug with PSI, and needs to be sorted. Don't know what other registry settings are being changed.

Sure, I will pass along the details you provided to the Secunia support team, when I get a reply. Thanks .

Interesting, and well spotted 26dolphins!

I hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it, but I have the same problem in Windows 7 x64

This is going to irritate me now I know about it!

I had sent a mail to Secunia support regarding this issue. I have had no reply yet. Seems like this issue is a bug, and affects all systems.

It will be interesting to see if Secunia take notice of this bug following your email Anupam.
It seems like it may have been around for quite some time.

Even though this bug appears to have a fairly minor effect, and is more irritating than damaging, it is bound to cause concern about what else PSI may be accidently messing up in the registry

I haven't received a reply yet, so I don't know if they have taken notice or not. On searching on Google, I came across three comments where users suggested that such a problem was occurring. They should have taken notice from that. I had sent links of two such comments in the mail too.

Yes, I had the same concerns. This issue must have been from sometime... and now we know about it. But, don't know what else is PSI changing in the registry.

Hi,

I did get too lazy over the weekend and didn't test the beta version, sorry.

Not that it would make any difference, as it looks like Secunia isn't taking an interest in this issue - after all, it's over a year old as by the posts in their forum.

IMHO, it's more than just irritating - it may well not be damaging, but it messes up with system settings, which is never a good sign.

I run Process Monitor while testing PSI and it's accessing a lot of registry entries/ keys, but frankly it was too overwhelming to check each and every one of them to see what exactly is going on there. It seems that, what ever PSI is doing in the registy, it doesn't break anything else or, at least, it doesn't break the functionality of anything else in a noticeable way.

Let's hope Anupam will get a reply.
Otherwise, it may be time to start looking for an alternative.

I've been a user of Secunia since it was first mentioned by Gizmo and have used all the versions of PSI from the beginning. In that time I've had only a few instances where I felt the need to contact them but on each occasion I had very little useful feedback, if indeed any at all. I guess this issue may be heading the same way unfortunately.

I'd happily try an alternative product but I'm not aware of one that focuses on security vulnerabilities in the same way that Secunia does.
Of course there is their online scanner but I believe that's more limited in what programs it checks.

Anupam does provide a similar service on this forum but currently his coverage seems to be limited to only Adobe Flash and Firefox!

I've had a little read about the 2.0 Beta version of PSI and I'm not too impressed.

It seems that, like many programs, PSI is becoming more needlessly complex and bloated with each new version. Unless I'm mistaken, this new version is more focused on automatically updating vulnerable programs for you. Under the circumstances of this thread, I'm not inclined to trust PSI to perform these updates for me without messing something up along the way!

Personally I won't be rushing to try this new version any time soon.

I am not very hopeful that I will get a reply from Secunia. Its been many days. Their support team might be busy I think as they must be getting many emails, but still, am not impressed. I was expecting a lot more.

Anyways, I haven't given too much importance to Secunia PSI anyways. Its good to know about vulnerabilities. But, ultimately it depends on the safe surfing and computer practice to avoid infection.

I haven't read about PSI 2.0 beta, so I don't know what new features are there. If anyone has a link to the features in beta 2.0, please share it here. I could not find it on their site.

I too am not comfortable with Secunia updating the vulnerable software automatically. I like things to be in my hand. Its my computer after all !
