BSOD Stop Code 21a!

I have XP SP3 installed on my LT and I get the above mentioned BSOD after Windows boots up and I log on.

I see my desktop and icons fine but after a minute or two I get a message telling me that Winlgon.exe is generating errors and needs to close.

I have tried system restore in Safe Mode (twice) and reverted the registry to an earlier point in time by using Erunt, all to no avail. While in Safe Mode I ran msconfig and disabled all startup items but again no joy!

Finally, I managed to use Dr Watson and have attached the log file. If anyone can make sense of this file I 'd be hugely appreciative.

PS Tried Macrium Rescue CD but this froze at the point where I needed to click on next (I am trying to avoid a full reinstall of XP for obvious reasons, especially as it's just a log on problem albeit a major problem at the moment).

Oops! Forgot to attach the log file.

Sad to say the text file from Notepad is over 3MB and even when compressed is still too large to attach at 298kb. :(

Coincidently this Dedoimedo article has just been posted which may be of some help.

Have you installed or updated anything recently that could be causing a conflict? This would be my first line of enquiry.

Thanks Sope for the link, I am going to see if I can solve the problem by reading and hopefully learning as I stumble on!

I may have installed some MS updates a while back but noting else springs to mind.

That's basically my technique too

Good luck with it.

Test your RAM:
http://www.memtest.org/

If you have more than one RAM module remove one at a time to test.

If you have access to an XP-SP3 CD run SFC.

If not, you should have 2 winlogon.exe files, one in System32 the other in System32/DLL Cache. The first is the one that the system uses to load.
Provided that they are not both corrupted try copying the second into System32, you may need to rename the first to do it, then reboot.

1 Attachment(s)
Attached (I hope this time!) is more info on my problem.

Rapport is an online banking security add-on and nt is I guess .NET from MS.

If I try to uninstall Rapport I get a message saying that Windows installer maybe corrupt. However, I can't download and install it because I can only log on in Safe Mode ie no Internet.

I deleted the Rapport entry with AnVir Task Manager but I still get the winlog.exe generating errors message when attempting to log on normally.

Anyone any ideas?

Have you tried the Windows Installer Clean-up Utility/Tool?

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Securit...-Utility.shtml

I'm sure you can find it on the MS website as well.

Hi kendall,

Thanks for the suggestion; I have downloaded Clean-up Utility/Tool but cannot install it when in Safe Mode. I opted to try an earlier restore point but there were no restore points for the whole of August and I could not go back any further ie July.

This is becoming very frustrating! :(
