Default DVD/CD drive not working

Hi.
My dvd/cd drive is refusing to work.

I have tried updating the software and using the find a solution thing given, neither of those did anything.
in the properties for the driver under general is an error message-''Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.''

Have looked at the similar threads on here, then gone over to the microsoft forum link thing, and gotten myself really confused. Some help would be greatly appreciated, but please be aware I'm having a blonde week.

Also, the drives have been out of action for probably over a year-only now has it become a problem.

Thanks x

I can suggest just one thing at this point looking at the error message that you have posted.

Go to the Device Manager, and right click the CD/DVD, and choose "Uninstall". Restart your computer. I think the Windows should automatically install the driver when you restart, and the drive should work again. Try this, and please report back if this works. If it does not, please report back what problems its showing after doing that.

The drives have been out of action because of this problem? One year is a long time... wow... you did not get any help from your friends, or a repair store? Anyways, try this and please tell .
