Unhappy Need help with installing os

Hi guys
I'm new here so I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not. I think I did something reall stuped. I found some programs on here to clean up hdds so i thought I would try out the dbn to compleatly wipe out some hdds on some old computers I got. I haver done anything like that before and it did what it was suppost to do but now I can't seem to put anew os on there. It tells me that it can't format the hdd so I have no idea what the heck I did wrong but I'm sure it was something. The hddwas only about 7 gs and it had windows 98 on it. I figure I start small, lol. Oh and it is an old laptop/notebook. Is there by any chance some one out there that could help me fix this thing. I wold like to put 98 back on it so my little one can play her old computer games on it. Please some one help. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks so much.

Can it boot from a cd? If so, try using the GParted Live CD and boot from it.
Then create a new MS-DOS partition, and then make a Fat32 filesystem. Try installing Windows again

Alternatively, you can try Puppy Linux, which works great on old computers. Don't need GParted to install it.

Hi soraya1sasha, welcome to the forum.

I think we had a conversation on the main site. I read this post of yours there too. Sorry to hear about the problem. You chose Darik's Boot and Nuke for wiping the disk. Did you come to know about the software from this link on the main site?

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best...se-utility.htm

There its written that this tool is dangerous in the hands of a beginner. Maybe that's why the problem has occurred, because you did something wrong? Do you remember what steps you took to wipe the disk with DBAN?

Also, can you please tell the exact error message when formatting? Maybe then we can know what the problem is.

I am afraid, I haven't used a wipe utility anytime, so, I won't be able to offer much help, if questions become software specific. But, if you post the details that I asked, maybe someone who has used such software, will be able to help you out.

Hi there
Nice to here from you againn. I went to the site that you were telling me about in your first reply on the site of the best free windows-7/vista software and there is were I got it. I read that it said may be dangeras for beginners. It was a very stuped move, I know. The message said: "Setup cannot install Windows 98 on your computer. An error was detected while formatting your primary hard disk partition." And I was not sure how to partition since I never had to do that before. Like I said what i did was very stuped. I'm just glad that I didn't do it on my main computer.
Thanks for trying to help

Hi
Yes it can boot from cd-drive. I'm not not sure what does programs are but I will try them. I think my problem is that I don't know much about partitioning but then I don't gess I can mess up to much more on it since I already messed it up with the dbn program.
Thanks so much

I searched a bit on Google for the problem... and I noticed that the formatting error you got is very common while installing Win98. So, I am providing some useful links for installing Win98. Hope you find them useful.

This one has some pretty good screenshots, and explains things in detail :

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-t...-98-t9803.html

This one contains step by step instructions :

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/install/win9x_install.htm

I found a pdf tutorial for DBAN, which I think will be helpful :

http://www.security.ku.edu/download/DBAN_Tutorial.pdf

In the end of the tutorial, its written, that after wiping the hard disk, you need to boot from Win98 disk and type fdisk /mbr to rewrite the MBR. So, maybe its just a simple solution of running this command, for your problem.

I also came across this video tutorial for DBAN. It looks helpful.

http://www.irongeek.com/i.php?page=v...o-wipe-a-drive

I hope you are able to find a solution from these links. I would suggest trying the fdisk /mbr first.

DBAN erases everything, including the partitioning, so there shouldn't be any problems there. Just create a new partition that uses all the space.

By MSDOS, I meant partition table. Keep all settings to default except, filesystem. Choose Fat32 if you want to keep using Windows 98.

When DBAN erases a hard drive, nothing is left except overwritten junk. Even the partition table and filesystem are gone.. That's what happened when I tried it out.
Then I couldn't install Windows XP anymore, because the setup disc cannot detect my hard drive. Had to use Puppy Linux Live CD (and the built-in GParted) to fix it. Afterwards Windows can detect the hard drive again.
