Default Driver problem or something else?

Need help myself this time 'coz my limited intel can't work this one out.

I should add that my tech is on uni vacation still and only wants to spend 10 seconds on the phone before rejoining his mates

Symptoms:

When scrolling a webpage my monitor suddenly goes blank, no colors, nothing. The keyboard does not respond. The computer does not reboot when I shove the button but freezes on the first screen with no OK "beep" from the Bios, so doesn't even get as far as Windows.

Switching off the power completely and restarting brings everything back to normal until the next time. Considering I'm online most of the day it's not happening all that often, three times now since last Friday.

My tech suggests a driver update from ATI but as the machine is almost new I'm wondering if this is right. It seems to coincide with my move to SRWare Iron beta and I'd like to know if:

a) its possible for a browser bug to cause this
b) if anyone else is getting the same

I switched back to Seamonkey today and tried all I knew to replicate the conditions and so far everything is fine.

I should add that for reasons of insanity I am currently running a x32 copy of XP Pro on a x64 machine, not that to my knowledge this should make any difference.

Any ideas would be most grateful. I don't intend to mess around with my drivers unless I know for sure that this is the problem area

There are any number of things that could cause this. A graphics driver problem, or conflict might cause this, but if the machine is almost new, the newest drivers for your card are probably focused on supporting Vista/7 not XP. If a new driver does not help trying a older driver might even do the trick.

Beyond that the next suspect would be something faulty with the GPU. Do you have integrated graphics or a separate card? A problem with the GPU might explain why you have to hard reboot to get everything back to normal.

Over heating could cause such a problem. A faulty or overtasked power supply. Maybe even bad ram.

The various reasons raised by Ritho are possible.

It can also be caused by Iron and/or its extensions since everything is fine after switching back to Seamonkey. There're other reported cases such as this. I tried Iron briefly and decided to stay with Chrome despite some critics about its privacy policy but personally I'm ok with it.

Thanks to both.

I had actually seen this Iron thread myself but as the issue wasn't the same as mine I began looking for something else. I'm running a FOXCONN A6VMX 0A MB with onboard graphics. It is hot here, the CPU & HD temps are fluctuating between 38-42c. The cooling system though is first rate and these temperatures are well outside any problem range.

It could well be driver related but shortly I'll be in a position to get a x64 bit system back into here, either Linux or back to W7 so this in itself might cure it.

Other than that Seamonkey does seem stable enough so I'll leave well alone until the end of the month and then change things around then.

Thanks again guys
