still trying.
I noticed on the PC's Belkin *Firewall > Security log* there are many events *Blocked by DoS protection, for instance Firewall log: Wed Jan 6 17:17:01 2010 1 Blocked by DoS protection 192.168.2.8 Wed Jan 6 17:31:41 2010 1 Blocked by DoS protection 192.168.2.4 Wed Jan 6 17:31:47 2010 1 Blocked by DoS protection 192.168.2.4 Wed Jan 6 17:45:24 2010 1 Blocked by DoS protection 192.168.2.4 Wed Jan 6 17:49:49 2010 1 Blocked by DoS protection 192.168.2.4 Wed Jan 6 18:02:59 2010 1 Blocked by DoS protection 192.168.2.8 Also the problem laptop is now appearing twice in DHCP Client List is any of this relevant to my problem? |

Are you sure that all the devices connected to your network are clean and free of infection? I'm curious as to why your router is blocking Denial of Service threats. You say "there are many events"... do you mean there are many 'Blocked by DoS protection' events, more than the ones you've posted?
Have you tried disconnecting all the other devices on your network and then seeing if the problem laptop will connect?... is something that's connected to your network preventing it from doing so? Also, if you are getting lots of DoS protection alerts it really is a good idea to have a word with your Internet Service Provider and explain your problem to them, if you haven't done so already. |

Did you notice that the DoS attacks are local ip's? What do yo make of that? Is the router blocking attempts to connect to it by the laptop because it sees the laptop as a threat somehow?

Yes, that's what's making me think that maybe there's an infection somewhere, either on the problem laptop, which is causing the router to block it.. or on the network itself, which is preventing anything else being able to access it?
The firewall log that reddy4it has posted doesn't show the DoS attacks as being too frequent, they're mostly minutes apart, except for two which are six seconds apart. If he was experiencing a serious DoS attack then I would have thought that the log would show the attacks at much more frequent intervals ie, every second or so. That's why I wondered if the log showed many more events, as per the wording of the post, and they were Denial of Service alerts also. I'm wondering if there's software on there that could be causing this, online games, IM programs... something that could be used to probe for a weakness, and the router is doing it's job and blocking it. That's why I asked if all the devices connected to the network were clean and free of malware etc, and that would include the problem laptop. If we had that info then you could rule this theory out and try something else. It may be something as simple as a faulty router. |

I would say an infection on the laptop is unlikely, because this problem was happening with XP home, so He fresh installed windows using a copy of XP Pro, and he still had the problem. If there is an infection it must be on the other devices on the network. As far as I know, there is another laptop, pc, and a wii using the router, and the pc is connected by a cable.

Hi Ritho,
Well replaced the router, no joy, in fact new router gave worse signal to other laptops, so went back to old Belkin one. So what did I do next? Had another laptop with dodgy hard drive, so replaced it with hard drive from laptop with wireless problem. Had to load Win XP Pro & drivers, wireless works fine except still same no internet, DHCP server denying network address. So even though I am using a different laptop but with same formatted H/D with fresh XP install,I'm getting same problem !!, beats me. Also if I had not mentioned it before Packets are very low 129 sent 39 received. Last edited by reddy4it; 20. Jan 2010 at 06:05 PM. |
