Ritho, to me this is indeed a very welcome effort you have undertaken to throw more light on the behaviour of Firefox and other browsers! Testing-retesting-measuring, when possible, is one of the golden routes to the advancement of knowledge.

Next week I will do some further testing using some of your approaches*. It is annoying and uncomfortable that I cannot find the cause(s) for the less satisfactory behaviour of Firefox on my system - have I caught a "competitor malware"?

(* Where should I post the results? In this thread, or in your new, or in both?)

Bengt, you can post the results here... as this was the thread started by you, and you have been performing tests on the browsers. Also, the thread has gone slightly off-topic with the discussion of K-Meleon and Firefox. So, the thread will be bought on track with your results.

Sorry for taking the discussion off-topic.

This evening I have repeated the speed test offered at www.bredbandskollen.se (maximum speed/throughput), retaining the three browsers FF, IE and K-M, but adding SRWare Iron. I took 5 measurements for each of the 4 browsers (random order for the 20 measurements to level out variations over time) and computed an average (trimmed arithmetic mean of the middle three after size-ordering to avoid subjectivity when deciding to discard possible outliers). Results in Mbps:

FF 11.4, IE 23.4, K-M 23.5 and SRW 17.9

I pay my ISP for up to 24 Mbps, and so IE and K-M seem to give appropriate estimates, while FF and SRW seem to underestimate, FF severly so. This is contrary to Ritho´s testing, and I have as yet not been able to find an explanation.

I also took (only once for each browser) the Peacekeeper test. (It is said to be "a JavaScript performance benchmark... It does not test, nor is the score influenced by, your internet connection speed or latency.") Scores:

SRW 2005, FF 1656, IE 328 and K-M 268.

As for Ritho (see his "My Browser Tests - Choosing a New Browser"), SRW is on top, followed by FF (with almost 20 % lower score), while IE and K-M are lagging far behind.

So SRWare Iron certainly seems to be a strong challenger in the browser battle. For my specific requirement - to be able to reach my bank accounts - it turned out that one of the banks accepted SRW, while the other did not. However, for the latter, it could be reached without changing browser, by installing and using an IE tab.

You can find it here :

Bookmarks > Bookmarks Toolbar

I don't remember what it is exactly called, since I deleted it, but you can see, it will be showing you news feeds. You can delete the folder via right click.

Anupam, thanks for the info. I never liked that
feature. I, like many ,also prefer Firefox over other
browsers and in my case NoScript is what keeps
me preferring it over the rest. Speed is important
but the total make up of the browser is what makes
FF my choice for every day use.
