Default PCFlank and GRC disagree?!

Can anyone shed any light on this please -

I've just run a PCFlank test and it reports that ports 135, 137, 138, 139 are visible but "closed" as opposed to being stealthed.
Repeated tests return basically the same results although there has been some variation i.e. sometimes PCFlank reports only 135, 138 as "closed" or 137, 139 as "closed". In fact, a quick test has reported these as "closed" directly followed by a stealth test which has reported them all "stealthed"!!
Cross checking with GRC Shields Up has said throughout that all my ports, including those mentioned are "stealthed"?!

I've not changed any settings recently, and up until today, all ports have shown up as "stealthed". Having a hardware firewall, I would expect that is what's being tested as opposed to Comodo firewall, but how is PCFlank seeing these ports which I gather are used by my network behind the router?

Setup =

Cable modem (Dynamic IP)
Linksys Router (with hardware firewall)
Comodo Firewall with Defense+
Wired desktop PC
Wireless network connected Laptop

Thanks.

Also....

Sometimes PCFlank will correctly identify my IP address and continue with the chosen test, but sometimes it returns the following message :-

"The test has found that the IP address used by your computer cannot be scanned. This commonly occurs because of a firewall program on your computer and/or you are connected to the Internet through a proxy-server or your ISP uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to share IP addresses.
This means the test cannot check your system as the results of the testing would be incorrect."

Never had this before....makes me wonder if something is up with my ISP, or maybe the PCFlank site?

Hmm.....

OpenDNS have just posted a message saying "currently upgrading our website" and have "taken it down for a few minutes" although they say DNS "is unaffected by this upgrade"

.......couldn't have something to do with this could it??

Well, I've shut down XP and booted into Windows 7.
Under Win7 I'm using the Windows firewall instead of Comodo and have not configured it for file sharing with the laptop.

Shields Up = all stealthed
PCFlank Quick test = 135, 137, 138, 139 closed
PCFlank Stealth test = stealthed
PCFlank advanced port test = 137, 138, 139 closed

I've confused myself now!
Do these results mean that GRC is testing my router hardware firewall whereas PCFlank is somehow able to see my network ports??

I know visible but closed ports are not really a great risk but PCFlank is giving a warning whereas GRC says they are stealthed????

I don't know much about all this. But, maybe it can be because you are connected to the internet through your ISP. So, to connect to the internet, it may have to go through several phases, and this is why difference in the test results. I took GRC tests, and faced the same problems. It showed my telnet port, and other ports open... whereas I had disabled the telnet service on my system.

Just what I think of it. Someone with more knowledge might be able to give a correct detailed answer. If not, you can post in Wilders... maybe someone there might know .

I have some knowledge but not expert enough to comment acurately on this specific situation. What I would say though is that there's no difference in security terms between a closed port and a stealthed one. It's only open ports which offer a route into your PC which is why your firewall/ bit-torrent client relationship is very important.

Thanks for the replys.

What's confusing me, is that GRC finds all ports stealthed and presumably is testing my hardware firewall which is what I expected, whereas PCFlank seems to somehow be looking at the ports used within my network behind the router. Even if this is the case, PCFlank is inconsistent with which ports it finds closed one minute but stealthed the next!

Maybe, as you suggest Anupam, it has something to do with my ISP.

As you say MC, I'm not too concerned about the ports as long as they are not open.
