Mysterious virtual drive

I recently had trouble with my computer not recognizing my cd/dvd drive.
I put a cd in the drive nothing happened as well as it not being shown by my file manager. I first thought it maybe a conflict with my virtual drive emulator which in my case is Alcohol_52% So I Dismounted all my virtual drives and uninstalled Alcohol_52%. I then rebooted.
After the reboot My dvd drive was still not shown. I went to system manager hardware and then drivers. I found my Optaric dvd drive along with this virtual drive ELBY CLONEDRIVE SCSI CdRom Device

Both had ? marks next to them with an error message saying there was errors with my driver. I uninstalled both drivers and then searched for new hardware. Windows found my dvd drive and installed the driver but also the ELBY CLONEDRIVE SCSI CdRom Device driver. Both had the the same error and still no cd/dvd shown on windows explorer and the drive would not function. I did a system restore from several days ago. It I got my dvd drive back.

I have several dvd rippers Wondershare being the latest installed. Which I used 3 or 4 days ago to rip a dvd that I own.
Anyway any ideas :)

Cheers

This Microsoft article might help you with the missing CD drive:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;314060

Did you have any other virtual drive software installed besides Alcohol? Elby has a virtual drive software called CloneDrive. If you have that installed, maybe that virtual device came from there. It is most certainly a virtual drive.

Thanks for the suggestion

No never used CloneDrive. Have always used Alcohol 52% and I also used magic disk. Both have been good programs. I uninstalled magic disc about a year ago. The problem started 3 or 4 days after using wondershare's dvd ripper I got from GAOTD which I downloaded some month ago. Anyway I disabled the Elby drive after the restore and it is no longer shown. I will try the Microsoft fix and see if I can get rid of it for good.

PS: How long has Microsoft been providing the dowloadable executable fix programs?
Pretty cool! Hope it works :)

I also use MagicDisc and I agree its a good program.

Its strange how the elby virtual drive appeared when there was no elby product installed. Dvd ripper should not be installing it, unless it makes use of a virtual drive to rip :D.

Well, since you have restored your system from an earlier date, there's no need for the fix now. The fix has to be run in case your drive goes missing again. It is quite a common problem, and that's why I think Microsoft has provided an executable for it. One other executable I know of is to fix the autorun problems on Windows. Sometimes the autorun feature of the optical drive ceases to work, and for that they provide a small tool. Its effective.

My Virtual Drive Preferences

I have always liked Alchohol (not free), however with win7 x64 I have found Poweriso (not free) takes the cake.. with Daemon Tools (free lite version) a tie. They both work well with x64 which is key.

D4RK_4NG3L, the suggestions are appreciated, but I am afraid the post does not help with the problem that has been posted. I am quite sure, wdhpr must be well aware of these softwares.

Is this related to what you were discussing?

Run ISO Files With Free Virtual CloneDrive
Quote:

Virtual CloneDrive is a small freeware application that allows you to mount image files, from a hard drive, as a virtual CD or DVD drive, just as if you had inserted the application into a physical CD/DVD drive.

maybe try on device manager to uninstall the ghost drives, then update/reinstall real cd drive

daemon tools lets you unmount drives all too, i've used it in past to fix problems with ghost drives before. They get made when you mount .iso files then close program but forget to unmount them sometimes

microsoft's virtual cd program also works fine, not widely known though http://weblogs.asp.net/pleloup/archi.../15/58918.aspx

edit: whoops lol, i just saw the last post being a few days old, used to forums that purge old threads so not used to looking at original date lol

This thread is one year old. There is no point in bringing forward such threads, or posting in them, since the user problem has already been solved. Please take care while posting in old topics. Unnecessarily reviving them is not good.

Can't the thread be actually closed, as I think, there's a close button if appropriate?
