Default Windows Vista 32bit update problem

I recently found a problem on my son's laptop a HP Dual Core2 with windows vista premium 32 bit system. Vista Service Pack 1 is installed.

Everytime I went to update it a message would appear stating: Code 80080005 - Windows could not update.

It will not automatically update either.

I have researched the problem and found a number of 'solutions' but none have worked so far. e.g. renaming software distribution folder in Win32 folder, re-registering dll files etc.

Can anyone give me a solution that they know works?. I do not want to reformat as it has taken a long time for my son to get his PC as he likes it. System restore is also not an option as I don't know how long the problem has existed.
