Why time consuming?

I think it will take almost the same amount of time as downloading a software from a download site, as compared to downloading a software from its own official site.

I download all my software from their official sites whenever possible. And mind you, I have a huge collection of free software. I have subscribed to RSS feeds of software download sites, and when I see a software update, I go to its site and download it. Maybe a bit lengthy, but I feel safe with this process.

Only if the official site itself provides download from a download site, then only I download from there.

Also, I have observed that even though download sites may show an updated version of the software, yet, when you check the official site itself, for some reason, the software has not been updated there yet, and for good reason.

About crapware being bundled... it depends on the software developer. It does not matter whether you download that software from a download site, or the official site, if the software developer decided to bundle the software with adware, then you will get it under any condition. Best is to learn how to avoid these during installation.

Do you mean like Linux repositories? I am afraid that there isn't such a reliable system for Windows software yet.

A few members here have posted such links, but still, they might be limited like Ninite, or may take time to update, like in Ninite, as you posted.

I think you are being too particular about direct download links... but well, different people have different choices.

Did you see this list - https://chocolatey.org/packages? Isn't this what you want?

Edit: There is also a graphical user interface for Chocolately: https://chocolatey.org/packages/ChocolateyGUI.

DDownloads provides this for many softwares, and not just for the installer, it also includes downloads for the portable version and various details about the software. For some, if direct download links are not available, it links to the download page.

Could be the best thing since hot chocolate on a cold day but most people landing on Chocolatey won't have a clue what it's about. "Like apt-get"??? Great, I get it but how many Windows users will?

Guys, sorry to post that the person who posted this thread turned out to be a spammer.

The motive behind posting this thread was to post about a site like FileHippo in interface, and it contains links to direct downloads of software.

In the past few days, there have been several attempts to post links to that site on the forum. Each time we have banned the IDs.

So, this time, they adopted to such technique of asking a seemingly genuine question. Now you (including myself) know why the OP kept insisting on a site for direct download of links, and kept taking out faults with whatever suggestions we provided.

Such spammers really infuriate me because genuinely helpful replies by the members go waste. We are quite careful about spammers, but sometimes such people befool us.

Anyways, this was just to inform that be careful before posting replies for any such requests in the future. We will also keep a lookout.

The guy got caught because he posted a link to the site on an article on the main site. Funny, that he was asking here for suggestions and posting a link there.

Will delete the thread later.

I was just thinking about the same thing. Seemed like whatever suggestions was made, O.P simply ignored it.

I'd leave it on because a) it has got useful comments and b) others can take note of the active moderation of spammers.
