Default Saving desktop icons

In Windows 7 Desktop, how can I save the random icon arrangements which I often do to suit my personal preferences, (I use the drag and drop method).

When I shut down and restart the computer the icons go back to the previous arrangement.

Thank you,

Don't know if I am not able to understand you, or you have written wrong.

What do you mean by saving desktop icon settings in Firefox? Where is that setting exactly?

You also say "Firefox desktop". Do you really mean Firefox desktop, or do you just mean desktop? Don't think there is any such thing.

Do you mean regular desktop, where all your computer icons are, for My Computer, My Documents, and other software icons? Or, do you mean something different.

Not able to understand

You are dead right. It is not just written wrong but stupidly written wrong! I deserve a kick in a suitable place for this!

What I should have said is my 'Windows 7 Desk Top'. If you can please substitute 'Windows 7 Desktop' for 'Firefox Desktop' in my post, you'll know what I am asking.

Thank you,

Hehe, thought so . Too much Firefox on your mind?

Anyways, have corrected the title and your post, both.

Anyways, under Sort by, you can sort the icons by Name or Item Type, and I think then they should stay in their positions. I usually sort by either one.

I hope you have checked "Auto arrange icons" checked, under View.

I think Anupam means UN-check "auto arrange icons" which is found by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting "view" from the context menu. By doing this you can place your desktop icons anywhere you like and they should stay put.

Hmm, Sope might have a point. But, I meant check only. I keep it checked, because, otherwise if you delete an icon from the desktop, with that setting unchecked, that place will remain empty, unless you drag an icon there.

Thank you both. It is working for me with Auto arrange unchecked. The icons stay where I want them.

Regards,

Glad you got it sorted out Melita. However, for future reference the Sort by option is like the similarly named option when you right-click inside a folder, it's just that there are less options to sort by. Furthermore, Auto arrange icons will make the icons arrange themselves according to your selection under Sort by. If you don't select an option under Sort by then it will default to Name alphabetically.

The other option to Align icons to grid will make the icons "snap" to an invisible grid. If you untick this then you can arrange icons arbitrarily without conforming to an "orderly" grid.

Lastly, Anupam is right. If you leave Auto arrange icons unticked then empty spaces in the grid won't be filled automatically.

Thank you joe. With your help, now I have arranged it even better!

I wonder if you can also explain the arrangement of files and folders in Libraries of Windows 7, as you have done so clearly above, for the desktop. As you know there are only 'View' and 'Sort by' for the desktop. But for libraries there are four items 'Arrange by', 'View', 'Sort by', and 'Group by'.

I have never been able to get this right with Libraries

Kind regards,

Honestly, I use the default for those settings, however, you can refer to this article from Microsoft to see what they do.
