Default Internet Relay Chat

When connecting to an IRC, what are the privacy and security issues involved.

Thank you,

Privacy: Others may see your IP (which is the reason why most networks support cloaking, "hiding" your IP by assigning a fake hostname to you).

Security: Technically, most IRC security issues are client issues. The IRC itself is just a text chat. Of course people might DCC-SEND you a virus there - but you'll still have to accept and execute it.

Thank you. I have been puzzled about this hostname! Just two questions:

(1) I have been blocked by an IRC network when using a VPN. Can they know that I am using a VPN?

(2) Are they able to look in to my computer and see other details such as the Browser I am using etc.?

Regards,

Sure, if other users use the same VPN or it's a widely known VPN (like Perfect Privacy) which might be in their database.

They can theoretically access your OS version (by /CTCP <nickname> VERSION) and your IP address, that's all.

Still a little puzzled about this If they see only my IP, which is the one assigned by the VPN, How could they trace it as coming from a VPN?

Because your VPN's IP might be publicly known and available.
