Need to re-boot after RegEdit?

Anyone know when we need to re-boot after editing the register?

In the past I am amazed (shocked actually) that some changes seem to be immediate (e.g. explorer context menu) but it does seem that some need a reboot. Is there any rule for this or has anyone had any past experience?

I am running XP

Local machine (HKLM) edits generally require a reboot. Current user edits (HKCU) generally require log user off and on. When in doubt, just reboot after an edit. But always back up before editing.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind and it makes sense.

What about HKCR? Seems to sometimes action and sometimes not?
