About internet security and Sandbox

Is Sandboxie the same as Virtual Machine? Is there a tutorial here on Virtual Machine?

Thank you,

Melita, to my mind a sandbox is a restricted environment whereas a virtual machine is just what it says - a virtual emulation of a real machine. They are closely related but not the same. I'm no expert and I may be wrong but that's how I see it. If you do a search for "what is a sandbox" I'm sure you'd find a lot of reading material. And yes, there's an article on virtualization here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/cont...-solutions.htm

Melita, forget about virtualization, Sandboxie and sandboxing is isolation. When you run a program under Sandboxie, Sandboxie reads the program that is in your computer and runs it isolated from the system, other programs, registry, files.

Then, when the sandboxed program changes anything in your computer, before the changes take place, Sandboxie copies the files into the sandbox. And then the changes take place, all within the sandbox, not in the real system.

Dont be, you ll be surprised of the large amount of people who have used Sandboxie for years who think of Sandboxie as virtualization. The isolation concept takes a little bit of time to grasp. For me to understand it was easy because in the past, I used another sandboxing program that does things totally differently than Sandboxie but the end result is exactly the same. I cant mention the name of the program because it is a paid program and there is no free version. But with this program, all files remain in your hard drive, anything that you download stays in the hard drive but files that are downloaded via an Untrusted/Sandboxed application (like the browser) can not touch or make changes to your real system, like Sandboxie.

Its amazing, both programs do the same but with one, Sandboxie, you flush the garbage out by deleting the sandbox. With the other program, the garbage stays, it doesnt go anywhere unless you get rid of it but this files can not touch the real system. Sandboxing its really nice, Melita. Don't be discouraged.

By the way, if you look for the words Virtual or virtualization at the the main Sandboxie page at the Sandboxie website or in the 6 pages of the Getting started section, you will not find those words...once. Thats like a hint.:)

Many thanks again Bo. I am not discouraged. I am almost certain that I will go for Sandboxie.

Regards,

You are welcome, Melta. If you decide to try Sandboxie, do as I suggested to this gentleman yesterday. What I wrote there are the only things that are really required to start using Sandboxie. The things that I mention there make browsing with a sandboxed Firefox comfortable and secure. In my opinion, sandboxing has to be comfortable and convenient, otherwise, it aint worth it. When I first started using SBIE, this were the things that I wanted to know right away and in my opinion, the only things that first time users have to know on day one. Everything else can be learned as you go.

Melita, I highly recommend you listen to this audio file, Episode 172, from about minute 33 and a half to the end. Its an interview with Tzuk, the original Sandboxie developer. In it, he talks about what drove him to create Sandboxie, what Sandboxie is, they compare virtual machines with Sandboxie, etc. This is pretty good stuff, in my opinion. I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you for all the help. I looked at all your links and got more than I need, to understand Sandbox. I'll get back here later when I am ready to install Sandboxie.

Best regards,

I am a little confused about what to download. The 64 bit version of Sandboxie is supposed to provide lesser protection! In that case, can the 32 bit version run in my 64 bit Windows 7? I shall be running this in both Win 7 and XP. What should I do? Please see the link.
